San Diego Realtor Matt Huneycutt explains a different way to consider looking at the commissions paid to a real estate agent.

Real Estate Agent Commissions

Let's talk about the elephant in the room, commissions.

Look, commissions are negotiable. However, there are some certain understood industry standards. When listing your home, I would say you need to expect to spend somewhere between five and seven percent especially if you're in Southern California. Every home on your block that sold most likely sold with a commission built in between five and seven percent.

You're not losing out by paying a real estate agent to do that job. If you don't hire a real estate agent to do that job you may be missing out. Because a real estate agent is a fantastic investment in the process of selling your home.

I know, we look at the sticker price and we think this guy could charge me an extra $5,000, $6,000, $7,000 dollars as opposed to maybe someone else or doing it myself. But that agent's job is to partner with you and get you returns of $50,000 or $60,000 on that home by aggressively marketing that property fiercely negotiating it, and then protecting you during the course of escrow against renegotiation's.

So when we talk about commissions I want you to stop thinking of it as a cost, but think of it more as an investment. I'm Matt Huneycutt with the Whissel Realty Group.
